Dr. Yogesh K. Vohra, CNMB Director
Dr. Yogesh Vohra is a Professor University Scholar in the Department of Physics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He is the founding Director of the UAB Center for Nanoscale Materials and Biointegration (CNMB) at UAB. CNMB is an interdisciplinary research and student-training center focusing (i) on the synthesis and characterization of nanoscale materials and structures that have potential biomedical applicability and (ii) on the integration of these nano-materials and structures into practical biomedical devices and technologies. CNMB currently has thirty-six faculty members at UAB and has active research grants from National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Department of Energy, NASA, Army Research Office, and the US Department of Education.
Dr. Vohra serves as an Associate Dean in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences, Campus Director for the NASA-Alabama Space Grant Consortium and UAB Member Councilor for the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU). Dr. Vohra also directs the National Science Foundation-Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program on UAB campus. Dr. Vohra is a Chartered Physicist and Fellow of the Institute of Physics, United Kingdom
Dr. Yogesh Vohra’s research expertise is in the properties of materials under extreme conditions of pressures and temperature, synthetic diamond growth and applications, nanomaterials for dental, hip and knee joints and biomaterials for regenerative medicine. Dr. Vohra is currently directing interdisciplinary research and training programs involving faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Dentistry, School of Engineering, and School of Medicine. Dr. Vohra has published over 300 original research papers in the international journals in physics, materials science and biomaterials. Dr. Vohra is a co-inventor of several leading patents in the growth of single crystal diamonds and nano-diamonds that are undergoing commercialization.
