July, 2014

Dear Marching Blazers, family, and friends,

Plans are well underway for the kickoff of the 2014 edition of the UAB Marching Blazers! In this newsletter, you will find important information pertaining to the marching band and some of your responsibilities that go along with it. Please read everything in this newsletter carefully so that you will be well-informed about our program!

Our experienced staff is putting together a show that will challenge and excite you as performers and will entertain the crowd and get them on their feet! Along with me, our Assistant Directors: Dr. Gene Fambrough (also Percussion Instructor) and our newest addition to our staff–Ms. Cara Morantz (please see her biography later in this newsletter) as well as our auxiliary staff: Mrs. Stacy Arnold—Coordinator of Auxiliaries and majorette instructor, Mrs. Angela Macrina—instructor of dance/Blazerettes, and Mr. Gary Christopher—colorguard instructor are all excited to put together a phenomenal program. Please know that your staff is excited about having the opportunity to work with you, to help you develop your skills, and to create the most exciting college marching band in UAB history!

This year—2014—marks the 20th anniversary of the Marching Blazers! As we continue to change the world through musical excellence, we are mindful that our program is young and growing while still building upon some wonderful traditions! We have much to look forward to, including our fall show—“A Blast from the Past—20 years and going strong!” (music from the year 1994) AND a wonderful trip to Hawaii we have planned that includes performances at the USS Battleship Missouri in Pearl Harbor! Join us for this exciting ride–UAB Marching Blazers – the best band in the land!

We have had two summer music rehearsals so far, and the turnout has been terrific! The band has the potential to be the best we have had! There are still 3 more scheduled summer music rehearsals. We hope to have some of the show music at the next one. If you’re in town, come on in from 3:30-5:15 on July 8th, July 22, and August 5. None of these rehearsals are mandatory…just suggested…and we have had fun! In fact, the performance at the Baron’s game on June 24th sounded so good that I am absolutely confident this year will be the BEST Marching Blazers edition of all time!

Band camp will start on August 16! We are working with a different schedule at this year’s camp in order to try to get more of the show on the field before classes begin. Be prepared for hard work, lots of fun, great music, and wonderful friendships! Keep in touch, and enjoy your summer!

Your Band Director,

Sue Samuels
