Percussion Ensembles

The UAB Percussion Ensembles include the Percussion Ensemble, the Steel Band, and the Electro-Acoustic Percussion Group. These groups are open by audition or placement through Dr. Gene Fambrough, Assistant Director of Bands, Assistant Professor of Percussion.

Percussion Ensemble is the primary percussion ensemble at UAB and is devoted to contemporary and traditional percussion ensemble literature. This group will also occasionally incorporate visual elements, marching percussion or jazz/fusion influence into the repertoire.

steel-bandSteel Band

The UAB steel band is part of the percussion ensemble class and performs a wide variety of literature, from traditional upbeat calypso marches to popular dance music. Summer Steel is a smaller outreach group that performs locally during the summer months.

The UAB Steel Band is a performing ensemble within the Percussion Ensemble Class. This group performs a concert in the Spring Semester and throughout the summer.

electroacoustic-percussion-groupElectroacoustic Percussion Group

This unique group utilizes electronic instruments (such as mallet controllers, MIDI controllers, trigger pads, and drum machines) combined with traditional acoustic instruments as a basis for performance. Students in this ensemble write, arrange, or transcribe their own compositions for a distinctive performance opportunity.
