Gulf War Illness Study

Did you serve in the Persian Gulf War? Have you been affected by Gulf War Illness (GWI)? You may be eligible to participate in one or both of our new research studies at the UAB Neuroinflammation, Pain & Fatigue Lab.

We are looking for male veterans with Gulf War Illness, Fibromyalgia/ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and healthy Gulf War veterans to participate in our research studies.

Participants Must

  • Be male between the ages of 39-65
  • Have been present in the Persian Gulf between 1990-1991
  • Be a Veteran suffering from Gulf War Illness (GWI), or be a healthy Gulf War Veteran

OR

  • Be male with Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

DAILY IMMUNE MONITORING STUDY

The study will help identify biomarkers in the blood of veterans with Gulf War Illness. Our research involves daily blood draws and recording self- reported symptoms using a handheld electronic device.

Your commitment will last approximately 30 days. There is one (1) telephone screening, one (1) pre-screening visit, twenty-five (25) consecutive clinic visits and one (1) follow-up visit.

If you are eligible to participate in this study, you will receive up to $750. ($30 per consecutive clinic visit).

BOTANICALS STUDY

The purpose of this study is to test the effects of nine anti-inflammatory botanical compounds and their effects on Gulf War Illness.

Your commitment will last approximately 300 days. There will be one (1) telephone screening, one (1) prescreening visit, ten (10) clinic visits, & one (1) final interview.

If you are eligible to participate in this study, you will receive up to $1500 ($135 per visits 1-10 and $150 on the final interview visit).
